Unfinished Business:
1. Campground:
Port Manager C. Phalen reported that the campground hasn’t really been busy. She added that $136.00 was collected down there today. Chairperson Edwards said this is typical of winter, but when the weather changes we will be busy.
2. Website:
Web master Mr. Ken Jarstad said someone is trying to send spam on our website. Other than that, everything is going along ok. Mr. Jarstad asked since he lives in Bremerton, if anyone would be interested in replacing him as webmaster. Chairperson Edwards said we weren’t looking for anyone to replace him. We are happy. He said the Port would not go out looking for reasons or advertising for someone to replace him. It was also discussed about putting other things on our website.
3. New Business:
Mr. Cooper, assistant Fire Chief from Dist. 2, Belfair, spoke about the damages that were done to the fire station in Dewatto, across from Manke Rd. Also about the damages that were done to the fire truck that was there. He also talked about the need for a new station in Dewatto. The building down there is about 25 years old and not that good of shape. He added it is not in a good place for the people in Dewatto. Mr. Cooper said after driving around the area, the best place for a station is right in the area at the Port Building. Mr. Cooper said one of the issues with the station in Dewatto, is people continue to get into the building. They have spent about $1500.00 alone repairing the fire truck that was in there from all the bullet holes. They actually took the siding off the building to get in. He said what the fire department would like is to enter into some kind of a deal with the Port to build a station on Port land. He would like the commissioners to get together to see what kind a deal could be worked out. He added one of the things that would be beneficial to the Port as well as the Fire Dept. would be they put ADD on the outside of the building so the first responders could grab them and go to the fire. They don’t actually fight the fire they just make sure of the address and that no one is in the building. Mr. Cooper said they have 15 CRT workers in the area and they are all trained with the ADD and CPR. He continued to say a station here would be 5 miles from the one at Erickson Lake. He was asked about the water to fight fires and he responded that they would get the water from Collins Lake. In the future they would like to do some recruiting down here for people to fire fight out of this station.
Mr. Cooper talked about training fire fighters, and about the department moving out of the station in Dewatto. Chairperson Edwards asked what size building are we talking about? He added he wasn’t going to get into the position of saying where he was in favor or not because he us to be a fireman. Chairperson Edwards said if it wasn’t for the Port, Dist. 15 would of never been. The Port has always had a working relationship with the fire dept. He thought it would be in the public’s best interest for that relationship to continue. He added that it is very important that the Port and the Fire Dept. to be kept separate. The size of the Port building has proven to be our ****** to the community, over the 12 x 20 building that the public wanted to build. Chairperson Edwards said we have the septic system to handle a fire station, and he questioned the fact if the Port did build the building if the fire dept would rent it. We need to know the size in question and more details.
Mr. Cooper will report back with more details. The question come up about the 5 year ******** on the land out there. Mr. Cooper said the helicopter would not land at Collins Lake because it is too small of space.
4. Dinner:
The Port of Dewatto is hosting a working dinner for the Port in Mason County. That includes Allyn, Dewatto, Grapeview, Hoodsport, and Shelton on January 12, 2010 at 6:00 pm.
We will have speakers from Sand Hill Women’s Corrections Facility. The Fire Department was also invited. Chairperson Edwards said each quarter one of the Ports would host. He added we are one of the Ports that use the Lady Prisoners in park clean up work. Chairperson Edwards said he attended the meeting in Allyn and they were talking about the by-pass in Belfair and the sewer systems. Chairperson Edwards said he did get a hold of Joe Manke and they were going to try to get together on Friday. He was going to try to get a longer lease, and more property. Joe Manke said he was aware of the fact that we wanted to lease more property. He said he talked to him about his Uncle’s tugboat.
Our next meeting will be February 2, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
